Agustina Bazterrica’s new book is nothing like her previous novel, The Remarkable Corpse. Perhaps only in how masterfully the author handles the horror that lurks all around us, hiding in the most ordinary things, situations, in the people and animals around us. ***** Nineteen stories like nineteen stops on a strange Stations of the Cross, which we stumbled upon randomly when we strayed from the path during a trip. Some scenes freeze us with their simplicity, while others are like dark baroque paintings full of writhing demons and incomprehensible symbols. In all of them, Agustina Bazterrica gets to the core: to the core of everyday life, to the core of language, to the core of the darkest humor. ***** The stories precede the novel The Remarkable Corpse in their creation, and the author wrote them over several years, which is why they are truly diverse diverse in the darkness that connects them all.
